Overview of GDRSD budget and impact of override failure

The Groton Dunstable Regional School District is asking for a $278,948 override from Dunstable and $937,570 from Groton in order to fully fund the FY08 school budget. For Dunstable taxpayers, the school override would add approximately 54 cents per $1,000 of property value to the tax rate, on top of the 77 cents added by the municipal override.

Without the additional funding provided by the school override, the district will be forced to cut an additional $1.2 million in expenses from the budget, most of which impacts existing staff and programs.

Misconceptions and Facts about the GDRSD Budget

This article addresses some of the common misconceptions that circulate within the community regarding the schools and the school budget.

Explanation of Increases in Highway Department Budget – FY08

The Highway Department is requesting support for the municipal override to help cover significant increases in the cost of diesel fuel, paving materials, and road salt, and to provide a replacement for the current 1992 one-ton truck, which currently costs approximately $6,000 to maintain due to its age.

Potential impact of municipal override failure on the Dunstable Police Department

If Dunstable's municipal override does not pass in the upcoming election on May 21, $150,000 will be cut from the Police Department budget. Before voting, residents should understand the impact that a budget cut that size would have on the level of police services available to the town.
