Wild turkey sightings

One of the great pleasures of living in Dunstable is sharing our yard with a wide variety of creatures that live with us permanently or regularly visit. One of our regular visitors this winter has been a family of turkeys. It has not been a great winter for them, so our bird feeders have been a welcome oasis in this desert of snow. It has been interesting to observe how their appearance and behavior has changed just in the last week as spring approaches.

We seem to have seen more turkeys in the last few years and I wonder if the turkey population is growing and how many other people in town have adopted these big birds ?

Turkeys

My mother's home is in Westford and in her neighborhood there is a large family of several turkeys, 15 or so, that I see nearly every time I visit. They are big! The males have a large "beard" handing from their chest. One time we saw one run and start to fly kind of low to the ground but gaining altitude then it shot about 100 feet up straight up onto a branch of a pine tree, it was something to see! My mom's good friend next door feeds them faithfully and they seem healthy and happy.
