from Groton Dunstable Regional School District [1]
Dr. Alan D. Genovese, Superintendent of the Groton-Dunstable Regional School District has confirmed that the reallocation of the students currently attending Prescott School is under consideration by the Administrative Team. Prescott School has a long history of being re-purposed. For example, the school, built in 1927 has served as the town's high school, a junior high, an elementary school (housing singular grades), as well as administrative offices. Its current use is as an elementary school for kindergarten through fourth grade. However, with declining enrollment, empty classrooms in other buildings, and financial limitations, the reallocation of students to Florence Roche and Swallow Union is being discussed as a potential cost-saving measure. Additionally, the school district may be able to provide programs and services to students in a more cost efficient manor.
The current principal of Prescott School, Ms. Betty Lavin, will be retiring at the end of the school year. Her retirement, along with some potential savings in staff and facility costs, greater efficiency of student services, and the ability to defer capital expenditures, have all been part of the recent discussions the superintendent is having with the Administrative Team. The superintendent met with the staff of Prescott School on several occasions to discuss this possibility and he has invited parents to a public forum to share his thoughts and invite feedback. Information will be shared with the school committee at their February 6th meeting. A decision is expected before the February school vacation.
