Tennis Tips: The Overhead Smash

Every week, students ask me what will make their overhead smash better.
From analyzing the pro's, I have developed a sequence that should help all of you. So, here it is...
- First, as your opponent hits their lob, get your body in line with the direction of the ball and turn sideways to that line.
- Use your front hand to position your body so that you are directly under the ball, as if you were an outfielder catching a pop up. When the ball is headed behind you or in front of you, you will need to sidestep in your turned position to move to where the ball is headed.
- Your racket hand should be positioned early, behind your back with the handle up as if you are scratching your back, just the way you do for a serve.
- Once you are in position, the overhead smash is as easy as serving, since that is really all you are doing. Keep your head up, and swing up, then snap down.
Good luck, and see you on the courts!
