Hargraves supports legislation to correct social security/private pension disparity
State Representative Robert Hargraves has signed on as a co-sponsor to a joint resolution asking the U.S. Congress to enact legislation that would correct the Social Security/private pension disparity that has resulted from a 1983 formula known as the Windfall Elimination Provision. This formula prevents anyone who is eligible for a Social Security pension as well as a private pension from receiving the full amounts from both. It was initially devised to reduce the advantage of certain workers with smaller amounts of career earnings covered by Social Security, but it also significantly affected the rightfully earned benefits of many other workers.
A reversal of this federal law would fairly benefit public employees at the state, county, and local levels who contributed to Social Security through private sector work at some point in their careers.
